"The Northern ice and rain that began me nourish me to the end
But the hot sun of the South is to truly ripen my songs."
-Walt Whitman, To the Leaven'd Soil They Trod
Welcome to my artwork. I began drawing and painting landscapes in New Hampshire, later making art in the US southwest, northwest, and front range of the Rockies, before settling in Virginia. Now I am focusing on painting what intrigues me the most: the ocean, trees and geologic formations, and how color "works" with all this.
Most of my paintings are in oil on wood panels, of landscapes or seascapes. I often take photos and/or make drawings while on site, then work from them in the studio.
My recent work is of the ocean, from photos I took while living in NH, and later during a trip to Maine before the pandemic. Since being mostly isolated, I yearn to go back; until then, I'm surrounding myself with images of the ocean and shore of the coastline. Looking at them again brings back the sounds and smells of the sea.
